Methodology & Notes

  • Data Source: FBI Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program, 2019, Table 43A.
  • Population Basis: Rates are calculated using the 2020 US Census demographic percentages applied to the FBI's specific "Population Covered" (229,735,355) to ensure jurisdiction accuracy.
  • Ethnicity Adjustment: The "White" category in this table represents "White Non-Hispanic." Hispanic arrests were mathematically separated from the White category using FBI ethnicity reporting ratios to prevent double-counting.
  • Demographic Selection: This analysis compares the three largest demographic groups (White, Black, Hispanic) which comprise over 90% of the US population. Other groups (Asian, Native American, Pacific Islander) were excluded from this specific comparison to avoid statistical skewing due to smaller population sample sizes.
  • Definitions:
    • Per Capita Rate: The number of arrests for every 100,000 individuals of that specific group.
    • Relative Intensity: A normalized percentage that compares the rates directly. It answers: "If all three populations were equal in size, what % of the crime rate would come from each group?"
