Lesson 7: Founding of NASA (1958)

The Civilian Mask

On July 29, 1958, President Eisenhower signed the National Aeronautics and Space Act. This law created NASA.

The Official Story vs. Reality

  • Official Story: The government claimed they wanted space exploration to be a civilian effort dedicated to peace, not war.
  • Real Story: This was a branding pivot. After the panic of Sputnik and the cancellation of the “Nuke the Moon” project (A119), the U.S. realized a military space program looked too aggressive. They needed a friendly face to hide the military operations.

The Personnel

Paperclip Reunion 📎

When NASA was formed, it didn’t just hire new scientists. It became the new home for the people we met in Lesson 1.

  • Wernher von Braun: The man who built missiles for Hitler became the Director of the Marshall Space Flight Center. He was the architect of the Saturn V moon rocket.
  • Kurt Debus: A dedicated Nazi who wore the SS uniform and launched V2 rockets at London. He became the first Director of the Kennedy Space Center. The man who commanded weapon launches for the Third Reich ran the launchpad for Apollo.

The Laboratory

Occult Inheritance (JPL)

NASA also absorbed existing labs.

  • Acquisition: NASA officially took over the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) from the Army.
  • Connection: Remember Jack Parsons from Lesson 3? The “Suicide Squad” lab he founded, born from sex magic and occult rituals, became NASA’s primary center for robotic space missions. NASA didn’t purge the occult roots. They institutionalized them.

The Fine Print

Peaceful Clause

The most important part of the NASA charter is the fine print.

  • Public Law 85-568: The law states NASA is civilian… unless the President decides a mission is vital for national defense.
  • Loophole: This one sentence allows the Department of Defense to take control of any NASA mission, classify the data, and hide the results. It effectively made NASA a front for the military.

The Critic

Whistleblower Gus Grissom

While not a founder, Virgil “Gus” Grissom was one of the original Mercury 7 astronauts selected in 1959. He is vital to this era because he refused to play the game. We will read more into him in the Apollo 1 Lesson.

Symbolism

Deception in the Name 🗣️

This is a favorite point for researchers of language and symbolism.

  • Acronym: NASA stands for National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
  • Hebrew Connection: In the Hebrew language, the word “Nasha” (נָשָׁא) means “to deceive,” “to beguile,” or “to lead astray.”
  • Implication: While it is likely a coincidence of translation, critics argue it is a form of admission hidden in plain sight. The agency created to lead humanity to the stars bears a name that means “to trick” in the language of the Bible.
